What to get rid before leaving

Hello,

Today I would like to talk about getting rid of stuff before leaving.

We have had a life in Brazil. During that time we accumulated a lot of stuff. I mean, we had two cars, one apartment, books, computers, appliances, toys, etc. Off course we will not be able to take everything with us to Australia. So it is time to decide what to take, what to leave behind and what to get rid of.

Cars

Get rid of them.
One of the cars I need to sell.

Cars lose value very fast in Brazil. I think it is about the same everywhere in the world. For example, a brand new Nissan Livina 1.6 costs about R$45000, while an used car of the same model build in 2010 costs about R$26000. As a general conclusion, keeping a car in the garage whilst you decide whether you will come back or not is not a good idea.

Apartment

Keep it, for now.

We don't know how better our life in Australia will be. So it is safer to keep it. Our plan it to wait one year, just in case we want to come back, and then decide about selling it or putting it for rent.

Different from cars, real state values in Brazil increase steadily. So keeping them for one or two years is not a bad idea.

Books

Tough question. I will definitely get rid of some of them, but I should better take some with me.

I have (or had) over 100 books in my shelf and I have a kind of attachment to them. So this was a difficult choice.
I still have about 50 books to sell.

I gave many of my books to friends and relatives. However I found out that Mercado Livre is a goodCorreios, which is really bad.
way of selling books. It is cheap, safe and requires little time. But you need to send the sold book by post, and the only post service available in Brazil is the state company

Computers

My computer.
Sell some, take some.

I don't need to say that our computers will be outdated within one year from now. So there is no point in keeping then at home. As a result, we will try to sell our desktop computers.

We have also some portable devices. We intend to take them with us.

Appliances

Sell them all!

Most of the appliances in Brazil run on 110/220V @ 60Hz, whilst the electricity supply in Australia is 230V @ 50Hz. So there is no point in taking them to Australia, unless you like the smell of smoke. Moreover, dispatching them to Australia would cost a huge amount of money.

Again, it is easy to sell them. But, as we can not send most of the appliances (refrigerators, TVs, stove, etc) via mail, it is better to sell them using OLX. This service enables us to contact the potential buyers directly and agree upon the best way to deliver the products.

Another interesting tip: it is easy to find used stuff, specially appliances, in Australia by using GumTree website.

Toys

Chose one or two.

I believe that it is important for children to take some toys with them. This will make children to feel more comfortable and safe during the process.

As regarding to the toys we are not going to take, we need to give them away. There is no market for Padrinho Nota 10 is a good place to look for orphanages in your city.
used toys in Brazil. So we are going to give the rest of the toys to relatives or institutions that take care of homeless children. The website

Conclusion

I described what we did and I think it worked pretty fine for us. However, that is not the rule. I believe different people would need to deal with this subjects in different manners. I hope my experience can give you ideas about the theme e help you somehow.

Cheers!
